It is starting to become my monthly habit that I join Service Saturdays on the first Saturday of every month and do community service. Last month it was Valentine’s Day cards to the elderly; this month I went and met with the elderly. Over at the Gallatin Rest Home, myself and six other volunteers chatted and laughed with some of our wise elders over a spelling bee contest.
Becky was a very serious competitor went all the way to the third round until she got “vacuum”. Doris, who was the oldest at the home standing at 103 years old, came in second. Patsy was this month’s spelling bee champion after confessing that she was a horrible speller.
There were certainly some spry characters despite their older ages and had a lot of spunk and humor. I even met another Hope among the retired citizens and I was constantly confused whenever someone called out her name and thought someone was talking to me. Hope was also a horrible speller like me and wonderfully sarcastic, she made me smile.
I had a pleasant time meeting them.
